"My independent works are mostly inspired by nature and as of a few years ago, I have been drawing and painting on site. Can you imagine that after some odd 35 years, I am now working in my sketchbook? Often, I visit Cape Cod to do watercolors and drawings. I’ll go down to Beach Forest Park or sketch townsfolk while sipping coffee at a local café, or studies of things I find on the beach. I now know what it means when one says to ‘chase the light’. Other works were started as demonstrations for my students when I was teaching at the University of Delaware or the University at Buffalo. These works were usually portraits I sketched in my drawing class then finishing in watercolor while instructing my students in the technique. It’s amazing how little time I find to work on my own art. It’s hard to explain how rewarding it is to just sit, observe and paint."
